What I Said
I rated MARA a Sell because I thought the core issue was still unresolved: the company had built a more durable infrastructure base, but it had not yet shown that this base could absorb bitcoin volatility and generate positive cash flow. I pointed to the TTM operating cash flow of -$834.7M and levered free cash flow of -$531.1M as evidence that the business was still not funding itself in a way I could underwrite confidently. I also said the AI and HPC buildout was interesting, but not enough on its own until free cash flow turned positive.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)
So far, following the Sell has worked: MARA is down from my entry, which means a short position would have earned about 23.2% over this review window. That outcome is consistent with my original concern that the stock would keep trading more on bitcoin sensitivity than on durable operating progress. The peer group has also been mostly lower over the same stretch, so MARA has not been an isolated outlier, but its decline still supports my bearish call rather than undermining it. What has not yet been validated is the stronger part of my thesis about cash flow improvement; I have not seen evidence here that the -$834.7M operating cash flow problem has been fixed.
What Could Still Prove Me Wrong
I could still be wrong if MARA starts showing sustained positive operating margin and a clear path toward positive free cash flow, because that would directly challenge my original cash-burn thesis. I would also reconsider if bitcoin stays strong enough to keep mining margins elevated and the company no longer needs to lean on asset sales or dilution to fund operations. If those operating metrics improve while the stock holds up, my Sell would no longer be the right framing.
