What I Said
I rated NLST a sell because I thought the market was pricing in cleaner cash conversion than the company had actually delivered. My original case leaned on the gap between the strong Q1 2026 revenue print of $104.9M and positive EBITDA of $8.6M on one side, and the still-negative -$15.5M of operating cash flow TTM on the other, with valuation already at 5.3x EV/revenue and 48.7x EV/EBITDA. I also said I would become more constructive if quarterly revenue stayed above $100M and operating cash flow turned positive.
Peer Comparison
| Company | Return Since Entry |
|---|---|
| NLST (this call) | +140.2% |
| MU | -2.5% |
| SNDK | -3.1% |
| STX | -22.8% |
| WDC | -31.0% |
Why It’s Working (Or Not)
This call has not worked over the tracking window: if I had shorted NLST at my entry price, I would be down 140.2% as the stock more than doubled. That move means the market has continued to reward the growth-and-margin story rather than punish the cash conversion gap I highlighted. The peer set was mixed to lower overall, with several comparable names down over the same stretch, so NLST did not simply move with a uniformly strong group. Instead, NLST diverged sharply upward, which undercuts my bear case that valuation was already ahead of the business. The specific risk I emphasized — that revenue and EBITDA strength had not yet shown up in operating cash flow — has not been enough, at least to date, to support the sell rating.
What Could Still Prove Me Wrong
If NLST can keep quarterly revenue above $100M and turn operating cash flow positive for two straight quarters, that would directly validate the improvement I said I wanted to see. I would also watch whether EBITDA stays positive without relying on a one-quarter spike, because that was part of the original bridge from growth to cash. If either revenue slips back materially below that level or cash flow remains negative while the valuation stays elevated, my original concern would regain force.
