What I Said

I argued that ADTN was still a fragile turnaround, and that the stock needed revenue stabilization, margin recovery, and better free cash flow before the valuation discount was truly attractive. My specific concern was that the business was still showing only high-$200M revenue, negative operating margin, and just $24.8M of levered free cash flow, which did not yet look like a self-funding recovery.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)

So far, that bearish call has worked: if I had shorted ADTN at my entry price, I would be up about 7.5% over this review window. The stock has moved lower while the peer group has been mixed, with several comparables also down but a few moving higher, so ADTN has not been an isolated move but it has still trended in the direction my Sell thesis expected. The part of my thesis that has been validated is the lack of proof that the turnaround is already durable; I still do not have evidence here that revenue has clearly stabilized, margins have recovered, or free cash flow has improved enough to change the setup. I cannot claim the full turnaround case has failed, but the specific caution I wrote about has not been disproven yet.

What Could Still Prove Me Wrong

What could still prove me wrong is a clean improvement in the exact metrics I flagged: revenue holding above $290M for two straight quarters, levered free cash flow moving above $40M over the next twelve months, and operating margin turning positive. If ADTN shows that kind of follow-through, it would mean the turnaround is finally converting into durable cash generation rather than just a valuation story. If revenue slips back below $280M or EBITDA falls under $20M, that would reinforce my original bearish view instead of challenging it.
