What I Said

I rated TLN a sell because I thought the balance sheet was still too stretched for the valuation, even with the company’s strong levered free cash flow. The key numbers I leaned on were 16.1x net debt/EBITDA, 584.1% debt/equity, and a 42.5x EV/EBITDA multiple versus peers, with 10x net debt/EBITDA as the level that would make me more constructive.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)

Over this tracking window, following my sell call would have lost money: the stock rose 7.7%, which means a short position would be down by the same amount. That is an incorrect result for the rating, and the market has not rewarded my view that leverage was the central constraint. The peer set has been mixed, with some names higher and some lower, so TLN’s move does not stand out as a clean confirmation from the group. The specific thesis point that has not been validated is my expectation that the valuation and leverage combination would pressure the shares before the balance sheet improved.

What Could Still Prove Me Wrong

If TLN’s net debt/EBITDA moves materially below 10x while the company keeps producing more than $1B of levered free cash flow, that would undercut the core of my bearish case. I would also be challenged if EBITDA holds above the recent quarterly levels while the stock continues to re-rate higher without any deterioration in the leverage profile. In that case, the balance-sheet risk I highlighted would no longer be the dominant issue I thought it was.
