What I Said

I rated WGS a Sell because I thought the business quality was better than it used to be, but the operating results still weren’t converting that moat into self-funding earnings. The specific issues I focused on were the 69.4% gross margin looking healthy while TTM operating margin was still -15.2% and free cash flow margin was -10.5%, which told me overhead, collections, and reimbursement were still absorbing too much of the value. I also said I wanted to see revenue growth reaccelerate into the high teens and accounts receivable stop growing faster than revenue before I would soften that view.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)

So far, following my Sell would have lost money: the stock is up about 10.3% since entry, so a short would be down by the same amount. That means my bearish timing has not worked yet, even though the original thesis was specific rather than vague. The peer set has been mixed to higher over the same stretch, with several comparables also moving up, so WGS has not clearly diverged in the way I would have needed to validate a short thesis. What has not been validated yet is my claim that the valuation was being supported by an earnings and cash-flow inflection that was not actually arriving; I do not have evidence from this month’s price action that the margin and cash-generation concerns have started to dominate.

What Could Still Prove Me Wrong

What could still prove me wrong is a sustained improvement in the exact operating metrics I flagged: revenue growth moving into the high teens, free cash flow turning positive, and accounts receivable no longer outpacing revenue. If those trends show up together, then my concern that the moat was not translating into self-funding earnings would be weakened. If instead the company keeps burning cash at roughly the same pace while growth stalls, that would support the original bearish case, but the stock’s current move has not yet given me that confirmation.
