What I Said
I argued that SoundHound’s product differentiation and patent position were real, but that those positives did not justify the valuation because the company was still posting negative margins and negative cash flow. My view was that the stock was pricing in a much faster move to operating leverage than the reported fundamentals supported, so I expected the downside to show up before the business proved it could convert growth into durable earnings and cash generation.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)
So far, following my Sell call would have earned about 13.4%, which means the short thesis has worked in the direction I expected. The stock has also moved differently from most of the peer set, which has been broadly higher over the same period, so SOUN’s weakness looks more company-specific than just a general move across the group. That supports my original point that the valuation was ahead of the financial profile. I still cannot claim the whole thesis is permanently proven, but the key claim about an expensive stock without durable profits or cash flow has held up to this point.
What Could Still Prove Me Wrong
If SoundHound starts showing sustained margin improvement, positive operating cash flow, and a clear path to earnings that makes the current valuation look justified, that would undercut my thesis. I would also be wrong if revenue growth accelerates enough that the market can reasonably re-rate the stock before those profitability metrics improve. For now, the main falsifier is a real, durable transition from growth-at-a-loss to growth with cash generation.
