What I Said

I rated ONTO a Sell because I thought the stock was already discounting a better earnings path than the latest quarter and the peer setup justified, even though the business still had a moat, a strong balance sheet, and healthy gross margins. My concern was that customer concentration, tariff exposure, and export controls were slowing the conversion of that moat into operating profit, while a 54.2x EV/EBITDA multiple and just a 1.2% FCF yield left little room for disappointment.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)

So far, that short call has not worked: if I had shorted ONTO at my entry price, I would be down 3.9% over the first month, which is why my verdict is Incorrect so far. The peer group has mostly moved lower over the same stretch, so ONTO has not been the weak name I expected relative to its comparables. The specific valuation argument has also not been validated yet; the market has continued to pay up despite my concern that the earnings recovery was already fully priced. At this point, I cannot claim the thesis was right on timing or on relative weakness.

What Could Still Prove Me Wrong

What could still prove me wrong is a continuation of the current pattern where revenue growth stays above 15% for two straight quarters and operating margin moves into the high teens, because that would support the idea that the premium multiple was justified. I would also be wrong if customer concentration, tariff exposure, or export controls do not materially slow profit conversion and ONTO keeps holding near its highs instead of re-rating lower. If quarterly earnings growth turns positive and the stock remains resilient, that would directly undercut my valuation-based Sell.
