What I Said

I argued that BW looked like a recovery story with real contract visibility, but that the balance sheet and cash flow profile were not yet good enough to justify a constructive view. My specific concerns were that Q1 2026 EBITDA was still deeply negative, TTM operating cash flow was negative, and the 2026 debt maturity was the key overhang, while the hoped-for turnaround depended on backlog conversion, margin stabilization, and refinancing.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)

So far, a short position would have worked: BW has fallen sharply since my call, so the Sell rating has been rewarded. That move is consistent with my original view that the market was pricing in a recovery before the cash generation had actually improved. The peer set has been mixed to lower overall, which tells me BW has not been an isolated move, but the stock’s decline still supports my thesis that the debt and execution risks were not yet resolved. What I can say with confidence is that the specific concerns I named — negative EBITDA, negative operating cash flow, and refinancing risk — have not been disproven by the price action.

What Could Still Prove Me Wrong

I could still be wrong if BW shows clear evidence that the turnaround is arriving faster than I expected: sustained improvement in EBITDA and operating cash flow, plus a refinancing or maturity extension that removes the 2026 debt overhang. I would also have to reconsider if backlog conversion starts translating into durable margin expansion rather than just headline contract visibility. If those operating and financing milestones do not materialize, the original Sell thesis remains intact.
