What I Said
I rated AMBA a Sell because I thought the company had enough growth and liquidity to keep investing, but not enough operating leverage to justify a 7.1x EV/revenue multiple with confidence. My focus was on whether the AI ramp would translate into durable earnings power, and I said I wanted to see revenue stay above $100M, operating margin turn positive, and operating cash flow move toward $60M-$70M before I would get more constructive.
Peer Comparison
| Company | Return Since Entry |
|---|---|
| AMBA (this call) | -2.4% |
| ADI | -4.6% |
| ALAB | -15.9% |
| MRVL | +8.5% |
| NVDA | +7.6% |
| ON | -20.2% |
Why It’s Working (Or Not)
So far, that short call has worked: if I had shorted AMBA at my entry price, I would be up about 2.4% on the position. The stock has drifted lower while the peer group has been mixed, with several comparable names also down but others, including MRVL and NVDA, moving higher over the same stretch, so AMBA has not simply followed a uniform sector move. What has held up is my concern that the valuation was running ahead of the earnings base; the market has not rewarded the company for the operating leverage I wanted to see. I still have not seen evidence in these numbers that the moat is translating into the kind of durable earnings power I was waiting for.
What Could Still Prove Me Wrong
I could still be wrong if the next two quarters show quarterly revenue staying above $100M and operating margin moving into positive territory, because that would validate the operating leverage I said was missing. I would also reconsider if operating cash flow gets into the $60M-$70M range on a trailing basis, since that would materially improve the balance-sheet and valuation case. On the bearish side, if revenue slips back below $90M or gross margin falls under 58%, that would reinforce my original Sell thesis rather than weaken it.
