What I Said

I rated ONTO a Sell because I thought the stock was already pricing in a better earnings path than the latest quarter and the peer setup justified. My original call leaned on the gap between a strong moat and balance sheet on one side, and customer concentration, tariff exposure, export controls, and a very rich 54.2x EV/EBITDA multiple with only a 1.2% FCF yield on the other. I also said the stock was vulnerable if growth slipped back below 8.0% or if earnings stayed weak while the shares remained near their highs.

Why It’s Working (Or Not)

Over this tracking window, a short position would have earned 17.5%, which means the Sell call has worked to date. ONTO is down from my entry, and the peer group has also been mostly lower, which is consistent with my view that the setup was stretched rather than uniquely strong. The part of the thesis that has held up best is the valuation warning: paying 54.2x EV/EBITDA and only 1.2% FCF yield left little room for disappointment, and the stock has already repriced lower. The original concern that the market was assuming a recovery faster than the business could deliver has not been disproven by the price action so far.

What Could Still Prove Me Wrong

If ONTO reaccelerates and sustains revenue growth above 15% for two straight quarters, that would directly challenge my view that the rebound was not yet durable. I would also reconsider if operating margin moves into the high teens and the stock stops trading like a premium multiple story. A renewed move back toward the prior 52-week high without those operating improvements would be especially important to watch, because it would suggest the valuation gap is being closed for reasons I did not expect.
